Hot-rolled and cold-finished rectangular bar per ASTM A479 / A276 for fabrication, machining, and structural service
Flat bar is the workhorse rectangular section that fabricators reach for when they need a custom-thickness raw stock between sheet (≤ 6 mm) and plate (≥ 6 mm). Common downstream operations are CNC machining of valve spool components, water-jet profiling of pipe support clamps, plasma-cut tube-sheet baffles, and laser-cut gaskets and shim stock. Ferralium 255 (UNS S32550, EN 1.4507) flat bar covers the same compositional and mechanical envelope as the round and forged bar product, supplied solution-annealed at 1080 °C and water-quenched to land ferrite content within the 35 to 55% qualifying band per ASTM E562. ASTM A479 / A479M (Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes for Pressure Vessels) is the umbrella spec for super duplex bar in pressure-vessel and ASME B31 piping service. ASTM A276 / A276M (Stainless Steel Bars and Shapes) covers general-service flat bar where pressure-containing duty is not the primary use case. EN 10088-3 (European equivalent) covers metric flat bar to the same compositional limits with the EN 1.4507 grade designation. For NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 sour-service the heat must satisfy hardness ≤ 32 HRC, ferrite 35 to 55%, and PREN ≥ 40 calculated from the actual heat composition.
